That bright and ever present Electrical Power Plant in the sky, shines and showers our planet with more than enough energy to fulfil all the world’s electrical power consumption needs many times over Each Day. It is a clean source of energy, it doesn’t produce or give off any nasty carbon dioxide emissions, and it WON’T run out. And most importantly it is FREE!! Meaning it is today one of the most economical ways to supply electricity to your home, it helps you to reduce your own carbon footprint which is why more and more Australians are installing it every year, with over a million households today making the move to go green already.

So how do WE turn this abundance of sunbeams and energy into useful electricity?

  • The sun’s light (and all light in general) contains energy. Usually, as sunlight hits a surface this energy turns into heat, such as the feeling on our skin when we sit in the sun. But when light hits certain materials, then this energy turns into an electrical current instead, and this current or Direct Current (DC) we can then harness for power.

  • Old solar technology began its cycle by the use of large crystals made out of Silicon, which produces an electrical current when struck by light. Silicon can do this due to its composition which allow its electrons to move around its composition when exposed to light instead of just bouncing in one spot to create heat. The electrons movement in the silicon turns a good portion of light energy into electricity instead. But this has always been expensive because big crystals are hard to grow.

Solar PV panels are placed on your roof, and when the sunlight hits a solar PV module, it creates an electrical field across the layers that then generate direct current (DC) electricity.

The DC is routed into an inverter that converts it into 240V alternating current (AC) electricity. The AC can then be used safely to power appliances in your home.

The import/export meter measures the amount of electricity that is imported and exported into the grid, with the digital display screen on the inverter recording electricity that is fed back into the grid.

Any surplus energy that is generated by the solar system and not used by your home is exported back into the grid, and depending on your states Feed-in Tariffs, further assist in lowering electricity bills.
